Woods Crampton Black Label Mataro (6pk)
More about Woods Crampton Find a stockist Grape Variety: 95% Mataro 5% Grenache Summary: For a small winemaker, Woods Crampton has achieved a lot in a small amount of time. Part of the Barossa new wave, Woods Crampton make contemporary wines, balancing character, complexity and freshness, a world away from the fruit bombs of the past. The Woods Crampton Black Label range are single vineyard wines made in small volumes. Where we started and In many ways the core of the brand.
Vineyard: Sourced exclusively from the Marschall vineyard, a eighty year old organic and dry-grown vineyard, planted on its own rootstocks to clones unknown, in the Vine Vale district. The loose sandy soils reflect sunlight and are well suited to Mataro.
Winemaking: Made using Burgundian techniques and a “hands-off” philosophy. The fruit is hand-picked and sorted before a cold-soak for five days at seven degrees. The fruit is primarily de-stemmed and split into small one and two-tonne fermenters with around fifteen percent whole bunches laid across the bottom. Hand plunged twice daily and allowed to ferment totally dry before pressing in a very old very gentle pneumatic press and racking to old large format oak (four hundred and eighty litre). Not racked or stirred for 15 months. Bottled without fining and minimal sulphur addition.
2017 Vintage: Winter and Spring of 2016 was much wetter than usual lifting the soil moisture levels for the region. December, January and February were all cooler than usual which prolonged the ripening period by 2-3 weeks. The slower ripening for the berries ensured a greater accumulation of complex character development that winemakers are often lauding in the better years. The fruit reached optimal flavour and tannin ripeness and will contribute to making very good wines.
Tasting Note: The nose is dark and ripe, unveiling with time aromas of dark berry fruit, blueberry, kirsch and mince pie spice. The palate is supple and intense with licorice and dark fruit flavours wrapped in savoury spice and framed by fine tannins. The opulent fruit is balanced well by stalky whole bunch complexity and beautifully fine tannins. Pair it with a steak with mushroom sauce.

Woods Crampton Black Label Riesling (12pk)
More about Woods Crampton Find a stockist Grape Variety: 100% Riesling Summary: For a small winemaker, Woods Crampton has achieved a lot in a small amount of time. Part of the Barossa new wave, Woods Crampton make contemporary wines, balancing character, complexity and freshness, a world away from the fruit bombs of the past. The Woods Crampton Black Label range are single vineyard wines made in small volumes. Where we started and In many ways the core of the brand.
Vineyard: Sourced from an established vineyard situated at almost the highest point in the Eden Valley, over 600m in altitude and right in the heart of the valley’s finest vineyards. Winemaking: The fruit was hand harvested early in the morning into small bins before rapid transportation to the winery. Following a chill overnight at seven degrees overnight the fruit was whole bunch pressed. Only the finest free run, less than five hundred litres per tonne was used. The fermentation was very cool, at around twelve degrees, and allowed to ferment to bone dry. The absence of the influence of solids is crucial to the purity of the style. Vintage 2020: It will be remembered for high quality across the Barossa in 2020 but yields were down. This was in part due to temperamental spring weather and a hot, dry summer. Altough the yields were affected by the heatwave of December and January, prudent growers managed this well with careful irrigation and maintaining soil moisture. The resulting fruit, (though less of it) was concentrated and exceptional. Tasting Note: Typically pale with green edges. The nose is redolent of the Eden Valley fresh with floral blossom and citrus aromas along with hints of just-cut green apple. The palate is light with impressively vibrant flfloral and citrus flavours defined by mineral and lime acidity before an impressively long finish. This wine has an intensity, length and cellaring potential that is second to none. Awesome accompaniment for pan-fried snapper fillets. Woods Crampton Michael John Barossa Valley Shiraz (6pk)
More about Woods Crampton Find a stockist Grape Variety: 100% Shiraz Summary: “My father created a thriving business from scratch, overcoming many challenges to achieve so much, all whilst never changing who he wasor forgetting where he came from. There is much similar in this one hundred and twenty year old vineyard, having slowly grown to greatness whilst still clearly expressing its roots. I like to think there is a long and bright future ahead for both of them. This one’s for you, dad.” - Aaron Woods.
Vineyard: Sourced from a vineyard planted in eighteen ninety four in the Marananga sub-region, dry grown and planted on its own rootstocks. Hand picked at less than one and a half tonnes per acre.
Winemaking: Made using Burgundian techniques and a “hands-off” philosophy. The fruit is hand-picked, given an overnight chill before a cold-soak for seven days at seven degrees. The fruit is primarily de-stemmed and allowed to reach ambient temperature before transferred to one-tonne fermenters with 30% whole bunches laid across the bottom. A very slow, cool ferment with the cap held down and hand plunging twice daily.
The fruit was racked to high quality low toast French Oak barriques (300L), fifty percent new, and topped every six weeks but not racked or stirred for twenty months. The wine was not fined, given a coarse filtration and a dash of sulphur before bottling.
Vintage 2018: Barossa Winemakers were happy with at the end of vintage, citing a high-quality vintage and good yields. Growing season started off well with light rainfall. October and November saw dryer conditions with above average warmer ripening days seeing vine canopies prosper. Dry and warm at the start of the year with just enough rain to retain moisture ensured good even conditions, followed by an auspicious Indian Summer with just the right balance of sunshine and rain.
Tasting Note: A dark brooding beast of almost impenetrable colour and tightly wound aromatics, displaying notes of dark berries, blackcurrants and spice. The palate is mouth coating and unctuous with massively powerful and deep fruit flowing across the tongue. Woods Crampton White Label Shiraz (12pk)
More about Woods Crampton Find a stockist Grape Variety: Shiraz Summary: For a small winemaker, Woods Crampton has been able to achieve a lot in a small amount of time. “The straight men of the Barossa new wave” Woods Crampton makes contemporary and balanced wines, a world away from the jammy fruit bombs of the past. The range includes a ladder of old vine Barossa Shiraz, complex and thought provoking blends and alternate varietals that may be the future of the valley. Winemaking: Sourced from a number of low yielding old-vine vineyards on the cooler eastern valley slopes, towards Eden Valley. Chilled overnight before primarily de-stemming and cold soak for five days at eight degrees. Fermentation was a cool twenty five degrees in small open two tonne fermenters with fifteen percent whole bunch and twice daily hand plunging. Matured in small and large format oak barrels, primarily French with some American. The thirty percent new oak component is all French oak. Bottled without fining and with minimal filtration. Vintage 2022: In 2022 the Barossa experienced outstanding growing conditions. Harvest started approximately 2 weeks later than the past 10 year average with Shiraz being picked mid to late March. A wet spring provided optimal soil moisture throughout the harvest months, spring storms resulted in lower than usual fruit set and although yields were lower the quality was high. Mild summer temperatures facilitated a long and slow ripening period which resulted in optimum colour development, and balance between fruit flavour and tannin. Tasting Note: A fresh and finessed example of Barossa Shiraz with a fragrant life of Eden Valley fruit. Aromas of black and red fruits and exotic spices with a judicious use of oak. The palate is bold and effortless with a depth of spicy, dark berry fruit flavours wrapped in fine tannins and fresh acidity. Drinking well now but will cellar well for up to five years.
